LET’S TALK ABOUT BREAST HEALTH

Boobs. We all have them but rarely talk about them or maybe you do but thats none of my business. I don’t know about you but I am certainly guilty of neglecting my girls health. With October being Breast cancer awareness month I wanted to talk about a few tips for your best breast health.

If Breast cancer runs in your family it is important to always update your doctor of your family medical history so you can stay updated with the proper screenings throughout every season of your life. Every body is different and with the recommended age of getting a mammogram at 40 years that certainly doesn’t mean you have to wait until then to start taking care of them.

1. Less Alcohol: 

Sorry ladies but studies have shown that women who consume alcohol daily have a higher risk than non-daily drinkers. According to The National Cancer Institute women who drank 45 grams of alcohol a day (approximately 3 drinks a day) were all across the board at much higher risk than those who did not drink daily. If you are drinking daily try to reduce your alcohol intake to one glass a day (preferably red wine) along with lot’s water before and after alcohol consumption.

2. More Sleep:

Something we all can use more of. Believe it or not the recommended hours of sleep at night for adults ages 26-64 is 7-9 hours of sleep. Lack of sleep can interfere with your bodies natural levels of melatonin which helps to regulate your estrogen levels. If you feel as if your estrogen is out of balance try getting a goodnights sleep.

3. Go for an aluminum free deodorant:

Putting on deodorant is routine for the majority of us who sweat. You might not think anything of it but shifting to an aluminum, paraben, and sulfate free deodorant is one step towards better breast health. Here are a few natural deodorants that are all natural and free of harsh chemicals that not only work great but smell good too. Because hey let’s be real nobody has time to smell like BO.

4. Sweat:

I am convinced that getting your sweat on solves almost all problems. Exercise is key for cancer prevention and (recurrence) according to breast cancer.org. Studies show that women who are physically active have a much lower risk of breast cancer than women who are inactive. A meta-analysis done by the National Cancer Institute 31 prospective studies, the average breast cancer risk reduction associated with physical activity was %12. Even if that means going for a walk in the morning or evening get out there and move your body for at least 30 minuets everyday.

5. Self-Exam: 

I reached out to my friend and baby birthing badass Heather Daniels aka (Doula Daniels) to explain how to do an easy at home self-examination. When Heather was 19 she found a small lump in her breast that ultimately had to be removed. Luckily the tumor was benign but if she hadn’t noticed the small lump it could have potentially turned into something more if left ignored. This is why self examination is so important at any age. I myself am guilty of not taking the time to self-exam monthly but we all can take less than a few minuets to incorporate this into our self care practice. Heather suggests doing your exam in the shower because hello you are already naked and can do this is a safe comfortable space. In this video she explains how simple it is to self-exam. If you do find a lump or feel something unusual don’t panic and please consult with your primary doctor or OB/GYN.
